Nigeria Win Belvo World Cup

(03 Jul 2017)

The sun shone in Clontarf yesterday as Belvo gathered to celebrate our World Cup marking the summer break for the Small Sided teams.

160 players represented all 25 nations within the club with some great football on show from the four year olds up to the 11 year olds.

Nigeria emerged victorious in the U11 category over group rivals Croatia, Romania and England.

Local Independent councillor, former Lord Mayor, Christy Burke (below) and Sinn Fein Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald called in and both spoke about the importance of sport integrating new communities, pointing out that adults can learn from the way children from all nationalities bond around sport.

This event was made possible with a grant from the Dept of Justice's Communities Integration Fund for which the club is very grateful. Many thanks are also due to Tracey Byrne and staff in Dublin City Council and who provided use of their portable goals.

Finally, parents Mairead & Wes Cooney and Marten Jonmark donated their time and expertise looking after the excellent BBQ and photographs respectively.
