Daniel McKenna In Ireland Squad For U19 European Qualifiers

(21 Mar 2017)

By Jamie Moore

Former Belvedere player Daniel McKenna has been named in the Republic of Ireland Under 19 squad for their UEFA European Championship Elite Phase qualifiers which begin on Thursday.

Dano now plays for Wolves but played for Belvo from our Academy up to U16 before moving to the UK where he’s settled into life well.

He’s been capped at and captained Ireland at U15, U16, U17 and U18 level and featured in a friendly game against Germany last month.

Tom Mohan’s team are in Belgium to face Italy, Sweden and hosts Belgium in Group 7.

Ireland must finish as group winners to qualify for the finals.

The Ireland Head Coach has been speaking to FAI.IE

“The aim is to qualify, and to qualify we’ll have to top the group. We’ve done a lot of analysis on all the teams in the group, but at the moment our big focus is on Italy. We can’t look beyond the first game.”

“We will be doing our utmost to add to what has already been a fantastic week for Irish underage football following the success of the boys and girls Under 17s.”

Mohan is pleased with how preparations have gone.

“The training camp has gone well. The majority of players have come in injury free which is a bonus though some players have been unable to train through injury but our medical team is working on having them available for the Italy game.”
