"We Need To Perform In Every Game" - DDSL Kennedy Cup Captain Ben McCormack

(09 Jun 2017)

By Jamie Moore

Belvo boys Ben McCormack and Ross Fay have been named is the DDSL squad for the Kennedy Cup, which takes place in Limerick next week.

Ben will captain the team.

The boys have been speaking to BelvedereFC.Com ahead of meeting us with the squad over the weekend.

Ben is delighted to be in the squad and to be the captain.

“Yeah it feels great to be in the squad and it will be really good to captain the team. A lot of good players have captained the DDSL at the Kennedy Cup before me, so that’s something I’m looking forward to and hopefully I’ll do my best.”

The DDSL will face Clare, Inishowen and Waterford in the group stages on Monday and Tuesday, with places in the ¼ finals up for grabs.

Ben told us what he thought of their group.

“It is a very tough group and we’ll need to be at our best to win the games. We’ve been training well and done well in the friendly games so we’ll be heading in with confidence, but know we need to perform well in all of the games to get through to Wednesday.”

Belvo boys Troy Parrott, Alex Dunne and Brandon Holt (above) helped the DDSL win the competition last season.

Winning the Kennedy Cup overall is not on Ben’s mind just yet.

“All we want to do is take each game one by one and to try get out of the group first, we don't want to look to far ahead.”

McCormack, who is also Belvo U14 captain, has been in the DDSL squad since U12.

So what sort of things has he learned over that time?

“It’s been a very long process from the U12 season to the Kennedy Cup itself but I’ve enjoyed it a lot. Combined with my Belvo training, I’ve had the chance to play and train with a lot of good players and coaches. With the DDSL and Belvo, we work a lot on tactics, playing out from the back and also set pieces, those things then help us in the tight games.”

Ben is looking forward to playing with fellow Belvo boy Ross Fay.

“Yeah "Dossi" has been amazing this season for the DDSL and Belvo. He’s been scoring goals and getting loads of assists. I think he will bring lots of energy to our team and something different by his style of play, he’s really quick which is a big part of his game.”

Finally, the captain outlined their plan for the week.

“We will travel early Monday morning then we will have breakfast and get sorted out then we will prepare for our match in a professional way. We play Clare in the afternoon then on Tuesday we play in the morning against Inishowen the in the afternoon against Waterford. All of these games will be big games mentally and physically but all of us are really looking forward to it.”

We’ll catch up with Ross on Sunday.
